Why does MagicSpam not honor my Whitelist and Blacklist entries?

Post by magicspam » Wed Apr 27, 2022 4:12 pm

The Sender From Whitelist and Sender From Blacklist do not operate on the From header but rather the SMTP MAIL FROM which is the equivalent to the Return-Path header. As such, the most probable reason that your whitelist or blacklist entry was not honored is that the From header differs from the Return-Path header.

To confirm, you can compare the From header against the Return-Path header by viewing the email source through your email client.
  1. Select the email
  2. Click on More
  3. Click on Show source

Note

While the instructions above to view the email source is for the RoundCube Webmail Client, these instructions are similar and applies to other webmail clients (MailEnable Webmail Client, etc) and email clients (Thunderbird, etc) as well.
Notice that the Return-Path header (user@domain2.tld) does not match the From header (user@domain1.tld), you would need to add the address in the Return-Path header (user@domain2.tld) to the Sender From Whitelist or Sender From Blacklist.

Note

Although quite uncommon, certain Mail Transfer Agents (MTAs) do not add the Return-Path header but instead add the equivalent Envelope-From header. In this case, add the address in the Envelope-From header to the Sender From Whitelist or Sender From Blacklist.
Alternatively you can find the sender to whitelist or blacklist through the MagicSpam logs, simply perform a log search filtered by the recipient address (user@domain3.tld) and sending IP address (1.2.3.4).

Notice that the Sender column of the log search results contains the address (user@domain2.tld) to add to the Sender From Whitelist or Sender From Blacklist.

Note

You also have the option to add the sender or entire sender domain to the Sender From Whitelist or Sender From Blacklist directly from the log search result interface, simply click on the address in the Sender column and select the appropriate option.
Thank you and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.
