Best settings to reduce backscatter

Post by panrec » Thu Sep 11, 2014 4:09 am

We've been having a problem with backscatter on the Plesk server we run for our shared hosting clients.

I've just enabled "Block Mail Servers on Dynamic/Dial-up Addresses" which wasn't enabled before, but is a recommended setting. Will this help?

MagicSpam says it helps reduce backscatter. Can anyone advise on the best settings to help reduce backscatter with Plesk/MagicSpam?

Hello panrec,

Thank you for your post!

MagicSpam help reduce backscatter by reducing the spam your server receives. To further reduce backscatter, you will have to check into any remote forwards and vacation auto-responder that are in use by your customers. These are part of the MTA functions and not controlled by MagicSpam.

We would first recommend enabling or resetting the anti-spam options/rules to the Recommended settings. The rule "Block Mail Servers on Dynamic/Dial-up Addresse" is a very safe and effect anti-spam rule that you should enable for your server. Once the rule is enabled, you should see significate amounts of spam messages being rejected and the number of backscatter reduced.
